Course Description
This course introduces Latin through an immersion-reading method using Lingua Latina per se illustrata: Familia Romana. Students acquire vocabulary and grammar naturally through comprehensible Latin stories, oral reading, guided narration, and structured exercises. Emphasis is placed on steady reading, accurate pronunciation, and joyful mastery.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Read and understand beginner Latin prose in Familia Romana with increasing fluency.
- Pronounce Latin consistently (restored).
- Recognize and use core grammar patterns (cases, agreement, basic verb forms) as introduced.
- Answer comprehension questions in Latin at an age-appropriate level.
- Translate short Latin passages into clear English when required (secondary skill).
- Build strong vocabulary (Latin roots and derivatives included).

- Exercitia Latina I (workbook)
- Colloquia Personarum (supplemental readings)
- Notebook (or binder) + pencils/highlighters
- Optional: Access to the Duolingo Latin course (will be added to the online classroom), Latin Bible

- Reading & Participation (in-class oral work) – 25%
- Exercises (Exercitia Latina + class sheets) – 25%
- Vocabulary Quizzes – 20%
- Comprehension Checks (short quizzes) – 20%
- Projects (light, creative, optional memory work) – 10%
Grading Scale:
A: 90–100% | B: 80–89% | C: 70–79% | D: 60–69% | F: below 60%
