Course Description: This course will help prepare high school students to succeed in college-level writing and English courses. It will focus on grammar, mechanics, and mastery of language to achieve eloquent expression of written ideas. Students will refine their sentence structure, expand their vocabulary, and develop clarity in their writing. Additionally, the course will emphasize advanced composition techniques, research-based writing, familiarity with MLA and APA formats, and mastery of various writing styles, including persuasive, analytical, and expository writing.

Course Objectives:

  • Develop Strong Grammar and Mechanics – Master sentence structure, punctuation, and word choice to improve clarity and coherence in writing.
  • Enhance Writing Style and Expression – Use advanced vocabulary, varied sentence structures, and rhetorical techniques for more effective communication.
  • Master Essay and Research Writing – Plan, draft, revise, and edit academic essays and research papers with a clear thesis and logical organization.
  • Understand MLA and APA Formatting – Properly cite sources and format papers according to college-level writing standards.
  • Strengthen Argumentation and Analysis – Construct well-supported arguments using critical thinking and textual evidence.
  • Improve Reading Comprehension and Response – Analyze complex texts, identify key ideas, and craft thoughtful written responses.
  • Develop Time Management and Writing Efficiency – Learn how to meet deadlines, organize ideas effectively, and revise work to produce polished writing.
  • Prepare for College-Level Expectations – Gain confidence in writing across disciplines, preparing for essays, research assignments, and timed writing tasks.

  • Notebook for notes and reflections
  • Pens/highlighters
  • Access to a computer for essays and research

Course Prerequisites:

  • Strong foundational grammar and sentence structure skills
  • Ability to write multi-paragraph essays with a thesis statement
  • Familiarity with reading nonfiction and analyzing arguments
  • Basic understanding of MLA formatting (helpful but not required)

Classroom Expectations:

  • Be prepared for discussions and assignments.
  • Respect differing opinions in literary discussions.
  • Submit assignments on time.
  • Participate actively in group discussions.

Grading Policies: Participation & Discussions: 15% • Quizzes: 10 • Essays & Written Responses: 40% • Projects & Presentations: 20% • Final paper: 15%
