Course Description: In this class, your student will learn the terminology used in studying fiction and how to read/study works of fiction by analyzing short stories in a variety of genres.

Course Objectives: By the end of this class, your student should be able to read and analyze works of fiction in a variety of genres.

Grade Level: 9th-12th

Class Time: Tuesday 2:35PM-3:50PM

Course Duration: Full Year

Required Book(s): I will print what you need. You do not need to buy these. Just pay the supply fee. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, The Most Dangerous Game, The Landlady, All Summer in a Day, The Pedestrian, The Yellow Wallpaper, The Monkey's Paw, The Lottery, The Bet, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Tell-Tale Heart, A Jury of her Peers, The Lady and the Tiger, A Pair of Tickets, Cathedral, The Story of an Hour, Birthmark, Jabberwocky, No Frigate Like a Book, Sea Fever, The Seven Ages of Man, Thumbprint, The Charge of the Light Brigade, Morte d'Arthur

Required Materials(s): 3 Ring Binder, Annotating Supplies (pen/pencil, highlighters, post it's, etc )

Supply Fee: $50 I will be making a copy of each short story and/or poem for each student as well as weekly handouts and assignments. There is no required textbook to purchase.

Classroom Expectations: This class is very discussion heavy, hence why participation is such a large percentage of your grade. Each week's homework should prepare you for the following week's class discussion so as long as you do the homework, you will be able to discuss.

Grading Policies: In Class Participation: 60%. Homework: 40%. All work must be submitted on time. Any late assignments will be docked 10% for each week they are late. I will not accept any homework more than 4 weeks late without a note from the parent.

Grading Scale: (100-90) = A (90-80) = B (80-70) = C (70-60) = D (60-0) = F
