Course Description: This class, with an option to take the DSST exam for college credit, will cover the principles of public speaking. We will cover:

  • Ethical, Social, and Theoretical Considerations of Public Speaking

  • Audience Analysis

  • Purposes of Speeches and Structure Organization 

  • Supporting Materials

  • Research

  • Language and Style 

  • Delivery

  • Writing & Presenting an Expository, Persuasive & Impromptu Speech

Course Objectives:

  • Students will be able to research, write, and present a speech

  • They will be able to pass the DSST exam for college credit (optional)

Grade Level: 9th-12th

Class Time: Tuesday 1:15PM-2:30PM

Course Duration: Full Year

Required Book(s): Student packet only for Introduction To Public Speaking: Equipping the Next Generation of Public Speakers by Andrew Pudewa

Required Materials(s): Paper, Pencil & Binder ( comes with student packet through IEW)

Recommended Book(s) and/or Materials(s): DSST Principles of Public Speaking DANTES Study Guide

Classroom Expectations: Students will listen, respect, & provide positive constructive feedback.

Grading Policies: Participation 30%, Classwork & Homework 40%, Presentations 30%

Grading Scale: 100%-90% A, 89%-80% B, 79%-70% C, 69%-60% D, 59%-0% F
