COURSE TITLE:   Introduction to Interior Design

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this class, we will cover a general overview of multiple interior design topics - including interior design definitions, theories, & functions.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The goal of this class is to recognize design elements in our environment – including design styles (historic & current), well-know professionals represented locally, the use of specialized design (Leed, ADA, Smart Design), and the emotional response to a space. This knowledge will be used to create a unique design, and presentation skills will be utilized to “sell” their idea to their clients.

COURSE DURATION:   Semester 2 (Jan-May)

Pencils, Erasers, Straight Edge, Internet Access (home)/Design Magazines, Color Printer (home)

GRADING POLICIES

Attendance & Participation: 70% Homework: 10% Final Project: 20%

GRADING SCALE

Grades provided as a courtesy (general guide) to parents, who are ultimately the final authority on their child's grade for this course. 100-90% = A 89-80% = B 79-70% = C 69-60% = D

Unit 1 The Language of Interior Design Decorator vs Designer, Public Speaking, Reading Blueprints, Scale Measuring, Function & Aesthetics, Specialty Design

Unit 2 History of Architecture & Design (Part 1) – Classical Styles Psychology of Color, Columns Study, Field Measuring (including standard measurements)

Unit 3 History of Architecture & Design (Part 2) - Furniture Intro to sketching with pen

Unit 4 Space Planning Proportion, Le Corbusier’s Nautilus/Fibonacci Sequence, Working Triangle (Kitchen), Furniture/Area Rug Placement

Unit 5 Creating a Floorplan Nameblock (logo), Scale Drawing, floorplan sketching

Unit 6 Design Rendering Floorplan Completion, Rendering Techniques

Unit 7 Elevation Sketches Elevation & Rendering Techniques

Unit 8 Furniture/Lighting Images Finalizing furniture, lighting, & paint colors

Unit 9 Board Creations Mounting Design Elements & Sales Pitch

Unit 10 Design “Sales” Presentation Client Population – other students or parents
