Course Description & Objectives: This two hour course covers significant figures, units, classification, the mole concept, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, acids and bases, redox reactions, solutions, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, the gas laws, and equilibrium.
Students who take and understand this course will be very well-prepared for a tough university chemistry course. Along with lecture, there will be laboratory experiments to provide hands-on reinforcement of concepts presented during lecture.

Required Book(s): Exploring Creation with Chemistry 3rd Edition by Plourde and Hughes (www.apologia.com) and the companion solutions guide/test booklet. ***PLEASE NOTE: Because of the differences between the second and third editions, students in a group setting cannot use both. They must all have the 3rd edition***
Required Materials(s): Internet access and email address, Scientific calculator (not graphing calculator)
Recommended Book(s) and/or Materials(s): The Apologia Student Notebook is highly recommended for the class.
Supply Fee: $50 lab fee to cover all materials used during labs
Course Prerequisite(s): Algebra 1
Classroom Expectations: This is an academic class and as such, there is a large amount of reading to keep up with as well as the homework. Students will be expected to spend between 30 minutes to 60 minutes daily in order to stay on track with the workload. Late work is not accepted without instructor approval.
Grading Policies: 33% based on Study Guide and Homework completion, 34% based on Module Tests (16 tests total), 33% based on Lab Reports
Grading Scale: 100%-90% A, 89%-80% B, 79%-70% C, 69%-60% D, 59%-0% F
(This class is a 2-period block class that spans both the 2:35-3:50 block and some of the 3:55-5:10 block. There will be a 5 minute break mid-way through the class for students to use the restroom & get water, etc, while other classes are changing rooms.)
